Step out the back door and you're on the Willowemoc, close enough to hear the water from the sunroom and cast a line before morning coffee. Spend the day fishing, hiking, or exploring town, then fire up the grill and settle in around the fire pit as the evening cools off.Sleeping: Two bedrooms with full beds, plus a futon in the riverview sunroom. The trout fishing starts at the back door, and there's plenty more within a short drive. Swim and paddle at Mongaup Pond in summer, catch a concert at Bethel Woods, trade the river for the ski slopes in winter, and end any day with a pint at one of Livingston Manor's breweries. Right outside the door

Trout harvest season opens April 1. Before that, catch-and-release fishing with artificial lures only is allowed on most streams. For flies and local advice, stop by Dette Flies in Livingston Manor, a family-run fly shop since 1928.

Bashakill Wildlife Area

About 50 minutes

One of the region's best birding wetlands during spring migration, so bring binoculars. Bashakill Vineyard sits right across from the 3,000-acre preserve, an easy pairing for the afternoon.

Mongaup Pond Trails

About 10 minutes

Choose a 1.5-mile loop around the pond or longer routes that connect to more than 45 miles of wilderness trails. The campground opens in mid-May, so check trail access earlier in the spring. There's no cell service, so download maps first.

Slide Mountain

About 45 minutes

The highest peak in the Catskills, a moderate hike of about 6 miles round trip. Snow and ice can linger on the summit into April, and trails can be muddy, so bring traction and waterproof boots.

About 10 minutes

A 120-acre lake with a sandy swimming beach and canoe, rowboat, and kayak rentals, open mid-May through early September. Rentals depend on staffing, so check ahead. There's no cell service, so download maps before you go.

Neversink Reservoir

About 25 minutes

Quiet paddling for canoes and kayaks from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Fishing and boating require a free NYC DEP Access Permit, so review DEP's rules before you go.

Peekamoose Blue Hole

About 45 minutes

A clear, deep swimming hole on Rondout Creek. From May 15 to September 15, a $10 permit from Reserve America is required every day. Permits are tied to your vehicle, and alcohol and large coolers aren't allowed.

Delaware River Tubing

About 45–60 minutes

Float the Upper Delaware on a hot afternoon. Lander's River Trips runs tubing from Skinner's Falls, and Kittatinny offers a 2 to 3 hour float from Minisink to Barryville for ages 8 and up.

Livingston Manor Trout Parade

About 10 minutes

The town's favorite day: costumes, floats, a vendor fair, and live music on Main Street, with the parade stepping off at 1 PM. Proceeds support local food pantries and the school music program.

Concerts under the stars on the site of the original 1969 Woodstock festival. The Museum at Bethel Woods tells the story of the festival and the 1960s.
